Thomas S. Eliot was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on September 26, 1888. He was the son of Edward Silliman Eliot, a butcher, and Isabelle Anne Browning Eliot.

His mother died when he was 10 years old. After her death, his family moved to St. Louis where he lived for the rest of his childhood.

He attended St. Louis Country Day School and graduated from Harvard University in 1912.
